Frequently Asked Questions

What is stormwater?

Stormwater comprises rain, snow, hail, and sleet. During storms, this water flows down our streets and into the stormwater system. When stormwater runoff enters the storm drain system through the gutters outside residences, it directly goes untreated into the bodies of water we utilize for activities like swimming, fishing, and other recreational purposes.

Where does stormwater go?
Various pollutants, such as those from driveways, hoses, parking lots, rain, sprinklers, streets, and more, are carried by water and enter the City's catch basins. This untreated mixture then navigates through an extensive network of pipes and channels, eventually reaching natural waterways like the Jordan River and Little Cottonwood Creek before making its way to the Great Salt Lake. Essentially, any substances dumped or left on the ground or in the gutter contribute to stormwater pollution.
